So before I close here are some things you might not have known about Annual Clock Change:

  • Benjamin Franklin got this whole Daylight Savings time started through his essay suggesting people could save candles by getting up earlier and making better use of available time.
  • Englishman William Willett in 1907 championed the idea and word quickly spread
  • In August 2005 we got our current timetable for Daylight Savings Time by then President George W. Bush who signed the Energy Policy Act that officially set when these days would be
  • Hawaii and most of Arizona do not follow DST
  • In the spring, that hour of lost sleep has been linked to increased risk of heart attacks OUCH
  • Why they set 2 a.m. as time change is that is considered to be the least disruptive time of the day
  • 27 Percent of Americans said the twice-yearly time change either makes them early or late on that specific date for all appointments

Columbus Day 2015

Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906 and a federal holiday in the USA in 1937 however, people have celebrated Columbus’s voyage since the colonial period in 1792.

Columbus 2015

Many countries officially celebrate a holiday on the anniversary of Christopher Columbus arrival in the Americas.  The landing is celebrated as Columbus Day here in the USA; as Discovery Day in the Bahamas; as Dia de la Raza in Latin America; as Dia de las Americas in Belize and Uruguay; as Giornata Nazionale di Christopher Columbus in Italy.  This holiday with the various names has been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century and officially in various areas since the early 20th century.

SHOCKER, for me is that Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon and South Dakota are the USA states that do not recognize Columbus Day at all.  It is noted though Hawaii and South Dakota mark the day with an alternative holiday or observance.  Several other states have removed Columbus Day as a paid holiday for government workers while still maintaining Columbus Day either as a day of recognition or a legal holiday for other purposes and these include California and Texas.

So that is my research on today’s holiday, Monday October 12, 2015 and for those of you who are off today, I wish you tons of enjoy your ME DAY as we remember how Columbus sailed America for all of us.

OK, I can’t help myself but you that really know me know my personal motto:  Onward through the fog!  HAHAHA but for Columbus in his time he really did go onward through the fog.   I am grateful to be an American so thank you Christopher Columbus.

Until next time … keep it REAL … REAL FUN that is and always keep upon your history!  Brenda
